Friends of Seniors Computer Class

For the past three years, I have been part of the Friends of Seniors club.  This is a community outreach club that volunteers to help senior citizens in and around Upton.  This includes the towns of Mendon and Uxbridge.  I have been the Vice President for the last two years.  What I mainly do is run a computer class at the Upton Senior center every Wednesday.

Every week, I drive to the Upton Senior center and spend an hour with the members there teaching them about technology.  It started as a simple troubleshooting session, but has formed into a full blown class teaching Word, Facebook, and other useful skills.  Folks bring in their personal devices such as iPhones, iPads, and laptops or simply use the desktops provided by the senior center.  Due to the variety of experience and knowledge level present in the people I am teaching, I usually spend a lot of time one on one.  This is great because it allows me to get to know each person.

I have seen great progress in the people I am teaching, and have gotten to know them very well.  Technology is often out of reach for senior citizens because it is difficult to learn if you don't grow up with it.  This computer class helps these senior citizens learn to use technology in their everyday lives in ways such as speaking to relatives across the country or printing out directions.
